#GlobalPacman vs. Broner

Our very own #GlobalPinoy, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao – the only eight-division world champion, will defend his title against the former four-division champion Adrien Broner in Las Vegas this January 19th.

The preparation of our “Pambansang Kamao” has reached a point where his team tells him he needs to slow down, and listen to his body when its waving a sign asking for a break. And Freddie Roach said that he tried slowing Pacman down, by telling him he doesn’t need to run on days he is sparring but Pacman’s response was, “What if my opponent is running right now?” and Roach said, “He’s got me there.”

Pacman is older by 9 years or more than nearly the entire crop of PBC’s welterweights that would love to take him on and are trying to reach the levels he reached a decade ago (Keith Thurman,30 years old; Errol Spence Jr., 29;  Shawn Porter, 31; and his opponent on Saturday, Broner, 29). How does he actually keep pace with these young and hungry fighters. His sparring partners are all in their mid-to-late twenties which is a constant reminder for him of the need to put in the heavy work in order to be fully ready in the ring on fight night.

“For me, the one thing about boxing, is it’s about how you prepare. Because for me, I don’t consider myself the best boxer or the best style in the sport. But I work hard. I punish myself during training,” Pacman said.

So if Broner doesn’t come in fully prepared, at his absolute best, a 40-year-old Pacman is confident that he will expose him quickly. Because to Pacman, age is just a number.
